Dhaka University Professor Dr. Saiful Alam conducted an orientation session on “Empowering Future Journalists: An Adaptable AI Module for Media Educators” for members of the Communication and Journalism Educators’ Network (CJEN) Executive Committee on 4 September 2025. The online program was joined by DW Akademie Program Director for Bangladesh, India, and Afghanistan, Priya Esselborn, and South Asia Center for Media in Development (SACMID) representative Syed Kamrul Hasan, who also shared insights during the webinar.

The orientation highlighted how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming journalism—from content creation and fact-checking to data analysis and audience engagement—and underscored the importance of aligning journalism education with this technological shift. The AI Journalism Module, co-developed by Dr. Saiful Alam and AI specialist Ferdous Bin Ali with input from media academics, practitioners, and AI experts, is designed as a flexible 30-hour course that can be adapted to diverse academic needs. It can be offered as an intensive five-day residential program, or integrated into existing journalism curricula through lectures, workshops, or practical sessions.

The course emphasizes real-world relevance, featuring case studies and applications of AI used by leading global news organizations such as the Associated Press, Reuters, BBC, and Bloomberg. Learning resources include theoretical content, practical exercises, and extensive reading materials tailored for educators.
