A two-day workshop on climate reporting under the AGILE project was successfully held on 3–4 July 2026 at the CCULB Resort in Purbachal, Dhaka. The workshop brought together communication and journalism educators from several universities in Bangladesh to strengthen capacities in climate journalism and collaboratively design climate reporting curricula for higher education institutions. The workshop was facilitated by Professor Jude William Genilo and Ms. Jesmin Papri and was attended by representatives from Begum Rokeya University, Jagannath University, the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), and the University of Barishal.
The first day focused on building participants’ understanding of climate reporting through expert presentations and discussions. Professor M. Shahjahan Mondal, PhD, of the Institute of Water and Flood Management (IWFM) at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), introduced key concepts and challenges in climate science. Participants also engaged with a session led by journalist Mostafa Yousuf of Prothom Alo, who discussed the economic, social, and policy dimensions of climate change reporting. The day concluded with reflections and discussions facilitated by Professor Gift Gwindingwe of Great Zimbabwe University.
On the second day, participants reflected on the previous day’s learning and examined a draft climate reporting course outline that had emerged from an earlier AGILE co-design meeting held in Sri Lanka in March 2026. Discussions centered on how the proposed course could be adapted and implemented within their respective universities. Participants were then divided into working groups to develop and refine course components, teaching approaches, and implementation strategies. The group work culminated in presentations, feedback sessions, and collaborative discussions aimed at strengthening climate journalism education in Bangladesh.
The workshop underscored the importance of equipping future journalists and communication professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to report effectively on climate change, one of the most pressing challenges facing Bangladesh and the world today.
