The Communication and Journalism Educators’ Network (CJEN) Bangladesh has officially committed to endorse the Venice Pledge on the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in Communications, joining a growing number of global organizations aligned with ethical and human-centric applications of AI in the field of public relations and communication.
The decision was unanimously agreed upon by CJEN Executive Committee members during their meeting on 26 June 2025. The signing signifies CJEN’s strong support for ethical standards in the integration of AI tools in education, media, and communication practices.
The Venice Pledge, initiated by the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management, is a landmark commitment that outlines seven guiding principles for responsible AI deployment in public communication. These principles are designed to ensure that AI technologies enhance, rather than harm, human dignity, truth, and democratic discourse. They are as follows:
- Human-Centric Approach – AI must augment and empower human decision-making, not replace it. Technology should serve people, not the other way around.
- Transparency – AI use in communication must be clearly disclosed. Stakeholders have a right to know when AI has shaped or generated content.
- Accountability – Organizations and professionals must remain accountable for AI-driven outputs, ensuring ethical oversight at all levels.
- Inclusivity and Non-Discrimination – AI systems must be designed and applied in ways that promote fairness, equity, and accessibility, avoiding biases or reinforcing stereotypes.
- Privacy and Data Ethics – Respect for individual privacy and data protection must be at the core of all AI-related decisions and tools.
- Accuracy and Truthfulness – AI must not be used to fabricate or manipulate information that could mislead audiences or compromise trust.
- Sustainable and Responsible Innovation – The development and deployment of AI must consider social, environmental, and economic impacts, ensuring long-term ethical innovation.
By signing the pledge, CJEN Bangladesh affirms its dedication to educating the next generation of communicators and journalists on the ethical dimensions of AI. The network will integrate the pledge’s principles into its academic activities, capacity-building programs, and advocacy for quality communication education in Bangladesh.
CJEN Bangladesh joins other academic and professional bodies worldwide in recognizing that while AI presents exciting opportunities for transformation, it also demands vigilance, responsibility, and ethical reflection. This move further underscores CJEN’s commitment to promoting inclusive, trustworthy, and sustainable communication practices in the digital age.
